Majority of the voting constituencies in Namibia have been counted by Wednesday, 4 December 2024, and the gulf between SWAPO and its opposition, Independent Patriots for Change is evident that the liberation party will place its Deputy President as the first female President of the country.
Namibia took to the polls on 27 November 2024, to elect their new administration, due to technical challenges, voting was extended by three more days as some voting stations were unable to conduct voting.
According to the https://www.elections.na/PresidentialBallot.aspx by Wednesday, 4 December 2024, at 7.11 am SWAPO’s Dr Nandi-Ndaitwah Netumbo Ndemupelila was on secure ground leading the race by 57.69%, a marked lead compared to her counterpart Itula Panduleni Felimoni Bango of IPC who was trailing by 26.3%
At the time, 120 out of 121 constituencies have been counted, 10 99 165 votes have been casted, out of that; 1084 741 votes were valid and 14 424 votes were rejected. 1 449 569 voters have registered to vote.
Opposition party IPC has already expressed unhappiness with the elections, saying the extension of the election was illegal. Voting was extended following technical and logistics challenges, whereby there was a shortage of ballot papers, which led to long snaking lines and people waiting for long in lines.
It is reported that some people, mostly the youth turned back home after waiting for long in line.
IPC Leader Itula has vowed to challenge the validity of the election outcomes in court citing a plethora of irregularities during the election period. He said regardless of the election outcome, IPC will not accept nor recognise the final results.
Namibia, like many other countries in Africa, is faced with a high unemployment rate, especially amongst its youth. Inequality is also plaguing the country with a gaping disparity between the rich and poor.
However, as things stands, the people of Namibia have spoken SWAPO remains in power and the country will field its first lady President.
