DA Sets Sights on Stable Local Governments and National Expansion Following Election Success

Johannesburg — In the wake of a pivotal electoral cycle, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has signalled a new chapter for South African municipal governance, declaring the party ready to spearhead stable, inclusive administrations nationwide.

Speaking on Friday to the media at the IEC results centre in Midrand, Johannesburg, Hill-Lewis framed the election outcome as a historic turning point for the country’s towns and cities, emphasizing that political leaders must now set aside campaign divisions to prioritize service delivery and citizen welfare.

The DA enters the post-election landscape buoyed by significant electoral gains that underscore its expanding national footprint. According to the party, the results demonstrate a growing DA deeply embedded in communities across the geographic and demographic spectrum, stretching from urban centres to deep rural areas such as Mount Ayliff, Fort Beaufort, Emfuleni, and uMngeni.

A central highlight of the results is the party’s performance in major metropolitan areas. The DA secured an outright majority in Cape Town, earning a resounding endorsement from voters that surpassed internal expectations.

Additionally, the party emerged as the largest political force in four other vital metros: Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, and Nelson Mandela Bay. Overall, the party expanded its institutional reach by capturing 104 new wards and approximately 233 new councillors nationwide.

Party leadership underscored a significant demographic milestone in this election cycle, noting that approximately one million black South Africans cast their ballots for the DA. Highlighting record support in townships across Cape Town and other regions where the party governs, Hill-Lewis attributed this growth to voters recognizing tangible efforts to improve living conditions and civic dignity.

“We are guided by one central belief: that every person, no matter where they are born, their race, their religion, or whether they are rich or poor, deserves the opportunity to live a good life,” Hill-Lewis stated.

With the rough-and-tumble of the campaign trail concluded, attention has swiftly pivoted to the complex arena of coalition negotiations. Municipalities facing complex governance challenges are in urgent need of inclusive, capable, and honest leadership to address foundational needs such as reliable water supply, consistent service delivery, enhanced public safety, and economic environments conducive to job creation.

The DA has already initiated outreach to prospective political partners, inviting any party willing to prioritize residents to join a shared governance program. Coalition discussions will be anchored on strict criteria: integrity in local government, administrative stability, zero tolerance for corruption, merit-based appointments, sound financial management, and measurable improvements in basic services.

Hill-Lewis stressed that these governance principles will bind the DA and every coalition partner equally.

In an effort to ensure transparency and maintain public trust, the DA announced that while negotiations will be kept out of the media spotlight, all finalized coalition agreements will be published publicly. Every pact forged will serve as a direct commitment to the residents of the cities and towns under their care.

Looking beyond immediate municipal arrangements, the DA views this election as a decisive stride toward its long-term national ambitions. By connecting with a broader swath of South Africans and demonstrating effective governance, the party aims to cement its position as the largest political entity in the country—a trajectory Hill-Lewis believes is key to unlocking broader national prosperity.
