The world will today be celebrating International Nelson Mandela Day, as declared by the United Nations (UN) in 2009. The celebration is in honour of the late former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela.
The day commemorates the good spirit of Madiba, whereby leaders and members of society are urged to take some time off and do something good for the less privileged. As political and business leaders will be out and about, the Free State leaders will also be doing their bit of good.
MEC for Treasury and DESTEA Mr Ketso Makume will be visiting Phelang Disability Home in Phelindaba, Bloemfontein; where he will be cleaning wheelchairs, chairs and assist in the kitchen with meal preparations and thereafter donate essentials to the disability home at 10am.
He will then move to Nazarene Autism Care Centre in Bochabela and end off his day with a cleaning campaign in Bochabela open area next to Pelonomi entrance.
The MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs Ms Elzabe Rockman will spend her day at Glen Village in Bloemfontein in celebration of Mandela Day, where she will establish food gardens program for members of the Glen village in order to fight food insecurity and poverty.
The MEC will further help establish an Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) in Glen Village, the ECD will receive toys for the children; thereafter, in partnership with ITAU Mill, they will help impoverished families with a bag of maze meal.
MEC Rockman will also embark on a cleaning campaign in partnership with the Department of Environmental Affairs, whereby they will be cleaning illegal dumping sites.
Rockman will end-off her day by donating about 168 school shoes to learners at Kolisang Khakhau Intermediate School.
The Free State Speaker of Legislature Hon. Mxolisi Dukwana and his Presiding Officers will embark on a two days Madela Day celebration commencing from today.
On July 18th in Botshabelo at Hohle Primary School with the handover of cleaning material and gardening equipment. Coordinated in partnership with CUT FM; this initiative seeks to create clean, enabling environments for children to learn from. Guided by the 2024 theme: “It is still in our hands to combat Poverty and Inequity,”

The Masia family is one of the proud beneficiaries of the Nelson Mandela Build, an annual event held to honor Nelson Mandela’s legacy by bringing together diverse stakeholders to construct homes for vulnerable families. This initiative is spearheaded by Habitat for Humanity South Africa, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of South Africans through advancing affordable housing interventions.
