Two sentenced 10 years for CENTLEC infrastructure crimes

CENTLEC seems to be winning the battle waged against its infrastructure and equipment by criminals, costing the utility millions in repairs and inconveniencing its customers by usually plunging them into darkness for extended periods.

In a statement, CENTLEC said they welcome the conviction and sentencing of two individuals involved in criminal activities targeting its infrastructure and equipment.

According to the Acting Spokesperson for the utility Tseliso Leba, Thabo Mofo (29) and Thabang Leeuw (24), were arrested on the 12^th of September 2025 after they had vandalized and stolen CENTLEC equipment leaving the community of Batho without electricity for prolonged period. During their arrest, they were found in possession of PVC copper cable to the value of R74 038 – 64.

They were both remanded in custody and the trial date was set for the 2^nd of March 2026, where they both pleaded guilty to the charges of theft and vandalism of essential infrastructure. On the 4^th of March 2026, both the accused were sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment each.

“In handing down the judgment, the court highlighted that offenses committed by the duo are a national crisis, and that they are considered a very serious crime that undermines economic stability and essential services in the country.

These significant sentences highlight the gravity of crimes against critical infrastructure and hope they serve as a deterrent to others,” said Leba.
