Fixing roads, fixing local economy

Roads are an integral part of any economy at any level, good roads conditions can translate into heightened economic activity in the Free State province, and can be attractive to investors and the business community in general.

Walking the talk and living up to her word, the number one citizen of the Free State province Premier Ms MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, took a turn in Phelindaba in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, 11 February 2025, to inspect the condition of the roads in the area.

Letsoha-Mathae committed to community members during her campaign for elections that she will return to them and attend to their grievance regarding the bad state of roads in the area.

Community members across the province are negatively impacted by bad road conditions as taxis would abandon some of their usual routes due to bad roads, resulting into commuters having to walk far. Taxi owners argue that their vehicles are getting damaged and having to make repairs every now and then is costly and eating out of their profits.

Community members have also voiced their concerns regarding the bad condition of roads; some say they have to carry their dead loved ones to the hearse as it cannot access the area, especially when it has rained. The same goes with emergency services, bakery trucks and many other activities.

The Premier, upon inspecting the roads in Phelindaba, she was not impressed and instructed that the yellow fleet be brought in and scrape the roads in the area.

“I have always maintained that as leaders, we must not be confined to our offices, but rather to actively visit and engage our people to get a true appreciation of issues affecting them.

We have appealed to our officials to render services to the people without first waiting for the Premier or Member of the Executive Council to give a directive,” said Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae.
