By Johannesburg — Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mr Lebogang Maile has expressed profound shock and sorrow following the tragic death of veteran sports broadcaster, entrepreneur, and creative-industry activist Owen Ndlovu.
Ndlovu’s life was cut short after he was reportedly hijacked and kidnapped in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.
According to initial reports, the abduction took place on the evening of Tuesday, 15 September, as Ndlovu was collecting his wife from a church service. While his Ford Raptor was later recovered in Walkerville, the violent circumstances leading to his death have sent shockwaves through the country, placing the spotlight once again on South Africa’s ongoing battle with violent crime.
Remembered as a towering figure in South African media, Ndlovu’s illustrious career spanned major platforms including Soweto Community Radio, YFM, Ukhozi FM, and SABC television’s popular Soccer Zone. Beyond his charismatic presence as a football commentator and television voice-over artist, Ndlovu was a multifaceted media entrepreneur.
Through Michael Owen Productions, he deeply influenced the technical and commercial architecture of broadcasting, contributing to station imaging, jingles, programme packaging, and the PSL Sekunjalo Soccer Show distributed across SABC radio stations.
In his later years, Ndlovu transitioned into a passionate advocate for the creative sector. Through groups like Artists United, he fought fiercely for the intellectual property rights and fair royalty payments of musicians, working on tracking systems designed to ensure artists were accurately compensated for their radio airplay.
MEC Maile paid tribute to Ndlovu as a vital bridge between sport, broadcasting, and creative entrepreneurship, emphasizing that his loss is a severe blow to the cultural identity of Gauteng and South Africa at large. Condemning the senseless nature of his death, the MEC noted that no citizen should go out to support a loved one and fall victim to violent crime.
Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and cooperate fully with the South African Police Service (SAPS) as investigations unfold. As the broadcasting and creative fraternities mourn, Ndlovu is remembered not only for his iconic voice on air, but for his relentless dedication to protecting the rights and dignity of creative workers.
