India Poised to Power Next Wave of Global Growth, Says IMF Deputy Chief

As the world’s fastest-growing major economy, India remains a critical engine for global expansion. This sentiment was underscored by International Monetary Fund (IMF) Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke following his five-day official visit to the country, which concluded on September 11.

During his engagements with senior government officials, business leaders, and key stakeholders across New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, Clarke highlighted India’s robust economic fundamentals and sound policy frameworks.

He met with prominent figures including Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman, Reserve Bank Governor Sanjay Malhotra, and NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri.

Navigating Global Uncertainty Through Resilience

While acknowledging India’s stellar economic performance, the IMF deputy chief emphasized the necessity of preserving macroeconomic stability amid heightened global volatility. Discussions centred on maintaining nimble policy stances, controlling inflation, and aggressively pursuing structural reforms.

Clarke noted that these measures are vital for boosting productivity and ensuring sustained, medium-term growth. Furthermore, he praised New Delhi for its steadfast support of multilateralism and regional cooperation.

Private Sector Dynamism and Technological Innovation

Clarke expressed admiration for India’s thriving corporate landscape, pointing to its deep talent pool and expanding capabilities in advanced manufacturing and technology. The IMF delegation’s exchanges with business leaders underscored how digital transformation and innovation are accelerating higher-value economic activities.

However, the IMF stressed that future success relies heavily on inclusivity. Sustained investments in workforce skills and responsible technology adoption will be crucial to ensuring the dividends of economic growth are distributed equitably across the population.

Concluding his statement, Clarke affirmed that India holds the structural potential to spearhead the next wave of global economic progress, with the IMF positioned as a committed partner on that trajectory.
