South Africa’s Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, is set to conduct an urgent site visit to Samancor Dikwena Chrome in Brits, North West Province, on Monday following a structural failure at the mine’s tailings storage facility.
The oversight visit comes in response to reports that a sidewall of the tailings dam collapsed, prompting heightened concerns over occupational safety and operational integrity within the region’s lucrative mining corridor. Mantashe, accompanied by senior officials from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR), will receive a comprehensive briefing on the extent of the incident, its environmental and operational impacts, and the ongoing investigation into the cause of the breach.
Tailings storage facilities store mineral waste left over from processing, and structural breaches pose significant risks to surrounding operational infrastructure, worker safety, and localized environmental ecosystems.
