National Treasury has refuted claims that no financial resources have been allocated to the South African National Defence Force’s (SANDF) Operation Prosper, setting the record straight following recent reports regarding military funding allocations.
The response comes after allegations surfaced citing Major-General Thulare’s statements to Members of Parliament that funding had not been released for the operation. Treasury confirmed that the Minister of Finance approved the release of funds on August 6, 2026, under section 6(1)(c) of the Appropriation Act.
This mechanism was selected as the most immediate legal pathway to ensure prompt financial disbursement following the assent of the Appropriation Act on July 16, 2026, which granted the required executive authority.
In its official communication, National Treasury expressed concern over media coverage on August 14, noting that despite providing a detailed response prior to publication, its clarification was omitted.
According to Treasury, including this context would have demonstrated that the disbursement was executed in full compliance with established statutory provisions, contrary to the parliamentary testimony.
Beyond the immediate funding for Operation Prosper, National Treasury highlighted ongoing efforts to assist the military with broader budgetary constraints. Treasury noted that it has formally written to the SANDF on two separate occasions offering structured assistance to address wider fiscal challenges, but has yet to receive a response.
