South Africa Looks to Scale Local Battery Manufacturing and Boost Global Exports

CAPE TOWN — In a strategic move to bolster South Africa’s advanced manufacturing sector, the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Ms Alexandra Abrahams, conducted an official site visit to Cape Town-based battery technology firm Balancell. The engagement is part of an ongoing initiative by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) to identify practical measures that support business growth, strengthen advanced manufacturing capabilities, and expand the nation’s footprint in emerging global industries.

Driving Innovation in Global Sectors

Balancell specializes in designing and manufacturing advanced lithium-ion battery systems. The company’s proprietary technology caters directly to high-stakes, heavy-duty industries, including electric mobility, mining, and various industrial sectors. Crucially, its systems are already deployed domestically and exported to international markets, showcasing the global viability of South African innovation.

During a tour of the facilities, Deputy Minister Abrahams highlighted the business as a prime model for the country’s industrial future.

“Balancell represents the kind of innovation and industrial capability that South Africa needs to support and celebrate,” Abrahams stated. “It is encouraging to see a locally developed company producing world-class battery technologies and creating solutions that are finding application both locally and internationally.”

Overcoming Barriers to Scale

A primary focus of the high-level engagement was addressing the practical constraints and operational bottlenecks that high-growth manufacturing firms encounter when attempting to scale operations. The discussions between government officials and Balancell’s management team centered around several core themes:

  • Commercialization: Accelerating the transition of new technologies from development to the open market.
  • Regulatory Navigation: Streamlining access to critical product testing and certification processes.
  • Investment Environment: Optimizing the policy and regulatory framework to stimulate private sector investment and improve the broader operating environment.

According to the dtic, direct dialogues with industry leaders are vital for the government to remain responsive to real-world business challenges. By understanding specific successes and hurdles firsthand, policymakers can better tailor support mechanisms to unlock growth.

Fostering Economic Competitiveness and Employment

The visit underscores the dtic’s broader mandate to accelerate macroeconomic growth, attract sustainable investment, and drive job creation. Mitigating systemic obstacles to investment is seen as crucial for creating a domestic landscape where innovative firms can compete effectively in both domestic and international markets.

Abrahams commended Balancell’s progress and its tangible contributions to local manufacturing, technological innovation, and technical skills development. She noted that the company’s achievements stand as clear proof that South African firms possess the talent and expertise required to build advanced technologies capable of competing globally.

Moving forward, the dtic plans to sustain its nationwide engagements with businesses. This collaborative approach aims to align public sector policy with private sector realities, ensuring South African enterprise remains highly competitive on the world stage.
