Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, has warmly welcomed the appointment of South African football icon Dr Theophilus “Doctor” Khumalo as the Vice-Chairperson of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Technical Committee.

MEC Maile praised the move as a fitting tribute to a legendary figure whose deep understanding of the sport spans an illustrious career as both a top-tier player and a coach. Highlighting Khumalo’s vast technical experience, Maile expressed full confidence that the celebrated maestro will seamlessly transition into his new strategic role.

“Dr Khumalo is one of the most celebrated and distinguished figures in our country’s football history and his exceptional talent, leadership and commitment to the game have earned him the respect of football supporters across generations,” said MEC Maile.

“We view his appointment as a major development as we believe that he will use his skills for the strategic development of football in our country.”

The appointment arrives at a crucial juncture for South African football, where stakeholders are placing heightened emphasis on grassroots development, elevating coaching standards, nurturing emerging talent, and preparing national teams for rigorous international competition. Maile emphasized that experienced football minds like Khumalo—affectionately known to fans as “Mtungwa”—are vital as the game continues to evolve.

Beyond elite competition, the MEC underscored football’s profound socio-economic value, noting its capacity to transform lives, foster social cohesion, create opportunities for youth, and stimulate local economies.

“We congratulate Dr Khumalo on this well-deserved appointment and wish him well as he steps into this important role and hope that his contribution will assist in inspiring a new generation of players, coaches and administrators,” Maile concluded.
