Gauteng Rolls Out 300,000 School Placements for 2027 Academic Year Amid High Demand

The Gauteng Department of Education has officially kicked-off its placement drive for the 2027 academic year, releasing approximately 300,000 placement offers for prospective Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners.

Announced by MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile, the rollout follows the close of the online admissions application period on September 4, 2026. The department was flooded with a staggering 781,476 total applications representing 346,556 individual learners—highlighting enduring public confidence in the province’s education system.

Out of the initial wave of offers released, 130,233 applicants have already secured their spots by accepting.

However, the sheer volume of applicants has exposed deep-seated infrastructure strains. High urbanisation rates and rapid population growth continue to trigger severe bottlenecks, with certain secondary schools drawing more than 1,800 applications for Grade 8 alone.

MEC Maile noted that while the department is committed to expanding facilities and building new schools through public-private partnerships, physical capacity limits mean not every child will land their first-choice institution.

Key Guidelines for Parents and Guardians:

  • Progressive Release: Offers are not sent out simultaneously; they roll out gradually as schools confirm available capacity. Parents are urged not to panic if they do not receive an immediate notification.
  • Action Required Within 7 Days: Parents receiving SMS notifications or checking their profiles online must log into the Gauteng Online Admissions portal to accept offers either as final or provisionally within seven days.
  • The Danger of Incomplete Documentation: Several applications are currently stalled due to missing supporting documents, such as valid proof of address. Affected families must engage district offices promptly to prevent further delays.
  • Strict Appeals Protocol: Formal objections and appeals are restricted strictly to cases where a learner has been transferred to a school the parent never applied for. The department has cautioned against disruptive behaviour at schools and district offices.

As the progressive placement process continues, the department is appealing for patience from guardians navigating the anxious transition period. Officials maintain that the ultimate priority is ensuring every child is safely accommodated ahead of the 2027 school term.
