
MAFIKENG — In a targeted effort to bolster public healthcare infrastructure and advance clean energy deployment, state power utility Eskom has commissioned a renewable energy microgrid at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital in the North West province.
The regional facility, which serves approximately one million residents across the Ngaka Modiri Molema District, will utilize the localized power system to ensure uninterrupted electricity to essential departments, including the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), operating theatres, and the Emergency Department.
Technical Specifications and Financial Offsets
Delivered through the Eskom Development Foundation (ESDEF), the project features a 200kW ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) array paired with a 400kWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The integrated installation is managed by a Central Microgrid Controller (CMG) designed to meet the growing load requirements of a major provincial hospital.
Beyond securing continuous power for life-saving medical equipment, the hybrid microgrid directly mitigates localized operational risks. The Eskom-supplied area has historically been susceptible to severe cable theft, leading to frequent supply disruptions. The new installation acts as a primary buffer against grid instability while substantially lowering the hospital’s operational expenditure by reducing its dependency on expensive diesel-powered backup generators.
Socio-Economic Impact and Just Energy Transition

Unveiled as part of Eskom’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, the project aligns with South Africa’s broader Just Energy Transition objectives by demonstrating how decentralized clean energy can support core public services.
“As we commemorate Nelson Mandela Day, we are reminded that service is measured by impact,” said Portia Mngomezulu, Eskom Group Executive for Corporate Services. “This renewable energy microgrid will help ensure reliable power for critical healthcare services and strengthen energy resilience. It is a practical demonstration of Eskom’s commitment to a sustainable and inclusive energy future”.
Mologadi Motshele, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation, highlighted the role of targeted energy interventions in community development. “By providing a clean and reliable energy solution to support critical healthcare services, we are investing in the well-being of communities and creating lasting social impact,” Motshele stated.
