As South Africa intensifies its efforts to secure inclusive growth and combat unemployment, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has positioned itself at the epicentre of the nation’s industrial recovery. Speaking at the Durban ICC, KZN’s MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Reverend Musa Zondi, officially welcomed delegates to the Second International Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Infrastructure and Investment Conference.
Convened in partnership with the national Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC), the high-stakes summit is running under the theme: “Reigniting Industrialisation through World-Class Special Economic Zones”.
A Strategic Gateway for Global Trade
For an economy navigating structural transitions, the conference arrives at a critical juncture. SEZs have long been recognized as a primary engine for the government’s economic agenda—specifically designed to attract foreign direct investment, bolster domestic manufacturing, and scale up export capacity.
MEC Zondi highlighted that KZN is uniquely positioned to lead this industrial charge. Powered by a robust logistical network, the province serves as a vital economic conduit:
- Maritime Hubs: Supported by the world-class Ports of Durban and Richards Bay.
- Aviation & Trade Zones: Anchored by King Shaka International Airport and the highly successful Dube TradePort SEZ.
- Industrial Corridors: Driven by the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, positioning KZN as a premier gateway to the African continent and global markets.
The two-day conference has drawn over 1,000 influential delegates to Durban, bringing together government leaders, global investors, development finance institutions, and industry experts to map out practical pathways to elevate Africa’s competitiveness.
Moving From Dialogue to Tangible Action
Unlike typical policy talking shops, MEC Zondi emphasized that this gathering is strictly focused on execution, partnership building, and securing concrete investment commitments.

To achieve this, the conference agenda is focusing heavily on several structural priorities:
- Infrastructure Financing: Exploring innovative funding models to strengthen and expand SEZs.
- AfCFTA Integration: Unlocking cross-border trade opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area.
- Localized Growth: Expanding regional value chains and ensuring that SMMEs and local communities participate meaningfully in the industrial windfall.
“Importantly, this conference is not simply about discussion,” Zondi stated. “It is about building partnerships, attracting new investment, sharing international best practice and identifying practical interventions…”
Celebrating Industrial Excellence
In a bid to foster competitive excellence, the event will host the inaugural Special Economic Zones Achievement Awards. This initiative aims to recognize outstanding performance by SEZs and private-sector investors who have made measurable contributions to job creation, local innovation, and industrial expansion.
Ultimately, the summit serves as a clear signal to global markets: South Africa is open for business. By fostering deep synergy between public policy, private capital, and local communities, KZN and the national government are actively laying the groundwork for a more resilient, competitive, and inclusive economy.
