DURBAN — A clinical and ruthless Springbok side extended their winning streak to 11 matches with a dominant 43-0 victory over Wales in their Nations Championship clash at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday. Running in seven unanswered tries in front of 40,299 roaring supporters, South Africa kept their clean slate in the global tournament, maintaining full control throughout despite periods of broken play.
While the Boks played in bursts, their attacking quality proved unmatchable when things clicked. Wales were held scoreless for the duration, failing to break down a resolute South African defence that held strong even during periods of heavy penalty concession.
The match opened with a kick-heavy exchange before the Springbok pack exerted early dominance. A powerful carry by Cobus Wiese set the stage for his brother Jasper Wiese to angle over for the opening try. Debutant flyhalf Vusi Moyo, one of four new caps on the day, slotted the conversion to establish a 7-0 lead after five minutes.
The pressure mounted quickly. Off a powerful scrum near the Welsh line, scrumhalf Cobus Reinach sniped over for his 20th Test try, with Moyo adding the extra two points. Despite commanding territory and counter-attacking effectively off Welsh kicks, minor handling errors delayed the Boks’ next score. However, right on the halftime whistle, Moyo pinpointed Jesse Kriel with a precise cross-field kick, sending the center over to secure a 19-0 lead at the break.
South Africa hit the ground running in the second half. Local favorite Jaco Williams, educated at nearby Glenwood High, latched onto a Cobus Wiese offload to score his debut Test try in the corner. Moyo’s third conversion sealed the bonus point at 26-0.
Coach Rassie Erasmus rotated his bench shortly after, introducing Manie Libbok for Moyo. Wales launched brief spells of attack, coming close when Ellis Mee dropped the ball over the try line. However, defensive standout Paul de Villiers consistently thwarted Welsh momentum with crucial tackles and a key turnover penalty near the line.
With Wales under severe pressure and facing warnings for repeated infringements, the Boks kept pushing. Returning to the Test arena after three years, Herschel Jantjies crossed for South Africa’s fifth try following a brilliant line-break and offload from Williams. The move also resulted in Welsh prop Ben Warren being sent to the bunker for a high tackle.
Capitalizing on the numerical and territorial advantage, the Boks struck again via a well-executed backline shift as Libbok floated a pass wide to Kurt-Lee Arendse for a finish in the corner, making it 36-0.
Fittingly, De Villiers capped off his tireless performance by powering over from a rolling maul for his debut Test try. Libbok added the final conversion to seal an emphatic 43-0 triumph, keeping the Springboks firmly on top of the Nations Championship ladder.
