Lights On After 30 Years: Innovative Off-Grid Solar Power Transforms Remote Free State Community

HARRISMITH — For more than three decades, the remote community of Santiago lived in the dark, disconnected from the national grid. That changed on Saturday, May 30, 2026, when a pioneering hybrid off-grid solar initiative illuminated the mountainous Eastern Free State village for the very first time.

The breakthrough marks a turning point for a region that traditional infrastructure simply could not reach.

Overcoming the Terrain

Situated near Verkykerskop—approximately 65 kilometers from Harrismith—the Santiago community is nestled within a highly environmentally sensitive area. For years, household electrification seemed like an impossible dream. The combination of rugged, unforgiving terrain and the severe environmental impact tied to constructing traditional powerlines kept the community isolated from modern energy infrastructure.

Faced with these geographic roadblocks, utility providers had to think outside the grid.

A Modern, Sustainable Solution

The answer came in the form of localized, renewable energy technology. Rather than stretching kilometers of costly and disruptive cabling across the landscape, engineers deployed individual hybrid off-grid photovoltaic (solar) systems.

How the system works per household:

  • Generation: A carport-style photovoltaic solar system.
  • Storage & Management: A dedicated inverter and battery setup.
  • Control: A standard 20 Amp meter.

While the infrastructure is entirely independent of the physical national grid, the economic model remains familiar. Residents will continue to purchase prepaid electricity seamlessly through Eskom’s standard vending system, ensuring a smooth transition into regular utility usage.

“No Community Left Behind”

The success of the Santiago project is being hailed as a blueprint for future rural electrification across South Africa. By bypassing the logistical nightmare of mountainous terrain, the project proves that environmental preservation and human development can go hand in hand.

“Projects like this reflect Eskom’s commitment to powering growth sustainably and ensuring that no community is left behind,” said Zetu Nciza, acting Senior Manager for Asset Creation in the Eskom CentralEast Cluster.

Nciza emphasized that innovative, off-grid alternatives are vital for extending basic services responsibly. “Through innovative solutions such as off-grid solar systems, we can extend access to electricity in a responsible and sustainable way, improving quality of life, supporting socio-economic development and helping to build a better future for all,” Nciza stated.

As the first lights flicker on in Santiago, the project stands as a powerful reminder that innovation can bridge the deepest development gaps, bringing both power and progress to South Africa’s most isolated corners.
