Springboks Refuse to Blink: Turin Test Against Italy is the Ultimate Step Towards Nations Championship Glory

TURIN — There is no room for complacency in the world of world-champion rugby, a sentiment drilled home by the Springboks camp as they gear up for a high-stakes clash against Italy in the Nations Championship.

For a side accustomed to the global spotlight, the message from the squad this week has been remarkably grounded. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s encounter at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, utility back Damian Willemse and lock Ruan Nortje made it abundantly clear that any notion of overlooking the Azzurri has been firmly locked out of the Bok changeroom.

The Road to Twickenham Runs Through Turin

The inaugural Nations Championship has reached its critical juncture. The calculus for the world-ranked Springboks is simple yet unforgiving: win, and remain firmly in the hunt for a coveted spot in the grand finale; slip up, and the dream of lifting the inaugural trophy at Twickenham on Sunday, November 29, evaporates.

Willemse, set to pull on the green and gold jersey for his 56th Test cap, emphasized that the team’s gaze is strictly fixed on the immediate task at hand rather than the grand prize waiting at the end of next month.

“We are trying to play for a cup in a few weeks’ time, but the most important week is this week,” Willemse said. “If we lose this weekend, I think we’ll be out of the race to be in the final, so we are not looking too far ahead. Our focus now is to make sure we follow through with the plan the coaching staff have mapped out for us, and then Saturday’s result against Italy.”

The fullback pointed out that history dictates a healthy respect for the Italian outfit. Despite dealing with several personnel setbacks, the Azzurri remain a well-drilled, dangerous proposition capable of punishing any lapse in concentration.

“It’s not going to be an easy game,” Willemse warned. “They are a strong and well-coached side, and they’ll come up with good plans. So, we’ve got to stay dialled in and make sure we don’t lose our focus. We saw last year when we played against them how dangerous they are.”

Consistency and Chemistry in the Pack

Rassie Erasmus has opted for a settled squad, a selection philosophy that Willemse believes provides the ideal balance to combat what Italy will bring to the turf in Turin. Following their exploits in Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry against New Zealand, the Springboks are eager to translate that momentum onto European soil.

In the engine room, Ruan Nortje is bracing for a physical battle alongside partner Salmaan Moerat. The duo share a deep history dating back to their Junior Springbok days in 2017, a familiarity that Nortje believes will translate seamlessly onto the international stage.

“Salmaan and I go back to 2017,” Nortje reflected. “We’re from the same age group and we played together for the Junior Boks, so every time I get to play with him, it’s a real honour. I’ve looked up to him since I saw him play for Paarl Boys’ High as a schoolboy, and I’m really excited to join up with him again.”

Nortje also praised Moerat’s resilience through a string of unfortunate injuries. “He deserves a lot of credit for what he’s been through with his injuries, and he always fights his way back into the squad, so I’m very glad for him and excited to join up with him.”

Reflecting on past encounters, Nortje noted that past meetings—such as their fixture in Pretoria—served as a stark reminder of the passion and grit the Italians bring, regardless of who features on their team sheet.

“For us the important things are to match their intensity, pitch up on the day, and to stick to our structures and what we want to do,” Nortje said.

Final Preparations

Having wrapped up their heavy lifting during a demanding main training block on Wednesday, the Springboks enjoy a recovery day on Thursday before shifting fully into match-day mode with Friday’s captain’s run.

With so much riding on the line, the world champions know they must be clinical from the first whistle to the last.
