Ramaphosa Takes Centre Stage at 5th SIDSSA as South Africa Champions Municipal Infrastructure

President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address today, 25 August 2026, at the 5th Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium of South Africa (SIDSSA). Speaking at 12h00 at Cape Town’s Century City Convention Centre, the President’s address marks the culmination of the three-day summit, which began on 23 August under the theme “Shaping the Future of Municipal Infrastructure”.

The focus on local government infrastructure highlights the pivotal role municipal entities play in executing essential service delivery and establishing a resilient foundation for inclusive economic participation.

By centering municipal networks, the symposium targets the immediate physical needs of communities while unlocking new capacity for regional economic performance.

A primary directive of this year’s gathering is securing greater, more economical sources of sustainable funding. Organizers aim to align municipal projects directly with South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sectoral emphasis has been placed squarely on digital infrastructure, agriculture, and housing—key areas identified as critical drivers for sustainable growth and SDG alignment.

The symposium functions as a crucial collaborative platform, driving project execution by bringing together key public and private stakeholders. In a notable milestone, this event marks a maiden African consultation session, gathering an expansive coalition of delegates:

  • African cabinet ministers, mayors, and technical experts
  • State-Owned Entities and municipal decision-makers
  • Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and Development Finance Institutions (DFIs)
  • Private sector leaders and academic institutions

By bridging the gap between high-level capital allocators and local implementation bodies, the 5th SIDSSA aims to accelerate bankable projects, foster cross-border partnerships, and build an enduring blueprint for infrastructure-led growth across the continent.
