President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially appointed Minister Stella Ndabeni to serve as the Acting Minister of Health. The announcement, released on Sunday by The Presidency, confirms that the temporary arrangement will run from 24 August through to 30 September 2026.
The executive decision was invoked in terms of Section 98 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa of 1996, which empowers the President to designate a Cabinet member to act in the place of another minister who is unavailable to perform their duties.
Under this temporary designation, Minister Ndabeni will assume full responsibility for all executive functions and operational oversight within the Ministry of Health. The leadership change comes as incumbent Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi remains on extended sick leave.
This key administrative transition aims to ensure seamless continuity in the governance and delivery of South Africa’s public health portfolio over the coming five weeks.
