Gauteng Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, has issued a firm directive to housing beneficiaries to take up residency in their newly assigned properties immediately upon handover.
Speaking during an allocation ceremony in Westonaria Borwa—where 73 housing units were handed over to community members, predominantly women—MEC Motara emphasized that rapid occupancy is essential to safeguard state-funded infrastructure. The initiative forms part of the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements Women’s Month program.
Combating Property Theft and Illegal Invasions
Addressing the new home recipients, Motara explained that same-day move-ins are crucial for protecting residential units against security threats, including vandalism, asset theft, and unlawful land and property invasions.
“As part of our ongoing support to women, this Women’s Month we are demonstrating how we continue to give back to women, especially the most vulnerable,” Motara stated. “We urge beneficiaries who have received keys to their homes to move in as soon as possible.”
The Department is currently working alongside the developer of the Westonaria Borwa mega project to pursue legal remedies. The provincial government is seeking court orders to evict unauthorized occupants who have unlawfully seized housing units, with the objective of restoring the structures to their verified, legal beneficiaries.
Restoring Security for Vulnerable Households
For many recipients, the allocation marks a significant turn toward socioeconomic stability. Malebona Mthembu, 31, a recipient who became responsible for her younger brother following the death of their parents and subsequent eviction from their family residence, shared the life-changing impact of securing tenure.
“After Grade 12, I could not further my studies because I had to take care of my younger brother,” Mthembu said. “With the money I was using to rent, I am now thinking of furthering my studies as I am still young.”
Reflecting on her past displacement, Mthembu expressed relief at securing long-term shelter, enabling her to redirect financial resources toward higher education and skill development.
