South African amateur golf will stand proudly alongside the country’s premier sporting codes and athletes following GolfRSA’s remarkable hat-trick of nominations for the 2026 SA Sports Awards.
The national governing body has been named a finalist for Federation of the Year, while the history-making Eisenhower Trophy squad of Christiaan Maas, Daniel Bennett, and Charl Barnard earned a nod for Sports Team of the Year. Completing the sweep, Maas secured an individual nomination for Sportsman of the Year.
GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn hailed the triple nomination as a watershed moment for the amateur game, emphasizing that the recognition extends beyond high performance on the global stage.
“For amateur golf to earn three nominations at South Africa’s premier sports awards is an enormous honour for everyone involved in the game,” Hepburn said. “The nominations cap an extraordinary period for South African amateur golf and recognise not only outstanding performances on the international stage, but also the structures and development pathways behind them.”
Historic Eisenhower Triumph Leads the Charge
The centerpiece of the federation’s historic year unfolded in Singapore, where Maas, Bennett, and Barnard shattered a nearly seven-decade drought. The trio claimed the Eisenhower Trophy at the World Amateur Team Championship, finishing on an astonishing 29-under-par to secure an eight-stroke victory.
It marked South Africa’s first victory in the event since its inception in 1958. All three players developed through GolfRSA’s structured pathway, rising from provincial junior ranks into the GolfRSA National Squad.
South African Golf Association President Peet van Schalkwyk commended the squad’s composure under immense pressure. “They played for one another and for South Africa,” Van Schalkwyk noted. “To see them nominated alongside South Africa’s finest sporting teams is a tremendous honour and thoroughly deserved recognition.”
Maas Caps Stellar Amateur Career
For Maas, the team nod coincides with individual acclaim after reaching a career-high No. 4 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Maas dominated the individual standings at the World Amateur Team Championship, winning by 10 strokes at 22-under-par to lead South Africa’s team charge.
A former SA Amateur champion, Brabazon Trophy winner, and two-time Freddie Tait Cup recipient, Maas recently completed an impressive collegiate stint at the University of Texas. Finishing second in the 2026 PGA TOUR University Ranking, he secured automatic status on the Korn Ferry Tour.
“To have our team recognised and then receive an individual nomination as well is very special,” Maas said, crediting his coaches, family, and GolfRSA’s support system for his success.
Grassroots Growth and Inclusivity
Beyond silverware, GolfRSA’s Federation of the Year nomination reflects widespread operational and developmental success. The organization expanded participation through mass-participation models like GolfSixes South Africa and the 9 Hole Challenge Series, while advancing transformation efforts through the South African Golf Development Board and the South African Disabled Golf Association.
Women’s Golf South Africa President Madeleine de Wet highlighted key structural initiatives, including the Tournament Support Programme—supported by The R&A, the National Lotteries Commission, and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture—which works to eliminate financial barriers for rising talent.
As Hepburn concluded, the nominations deliver a clear message to aspiring junior golfers across the country: “Our young players can look at Christiaan, Daniel and Charl and know that they came through the same junior tournaments, provincial structures and GolfRSA programmes that are available to them. It shows what is possible.”
