EUGENE, OREGON — South Africa’s next generation of track and field icons left an indelible mark on the global stage at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Displaying grit, elite execution, and world-class raw talent, the South African squad secured an impressive eight medals—one gold, three silvers, and four bronzes—asserting the country’s status as a powerhouse in junior athletics.
Heymans Reigns Supreme in Javelin
The standout performance of the championship belonged to field phenomenon Jan-Hendrik Heymans. Demonstrating supreme poise under pressure, Heymans launched a staggering gold-medal-winning throw of 80.50m in the men’s javelin final, outclassing his nearest opponent by over six meters (74.09m) to claim World U20 gold. Teammate Marques Olivier delivered a commendable performance alongside him, securing seventh place with a best effort of 70.94m.
Double Silver Heroics for Ramokgopa
On the track, hurdling sensation Tumi Ramokgopa emerged as the undisputed star of the women’s contingent, securing two impressive silver medals. Ramokgopa showcased exceptional rhythm and endurance over the barrier events. In the 100m hurdles, she advanced through the rounds seamlessly, capturing silver in a sizzling 12.96 seconds. She matched that effort in the 400m hurdles final, storming home in 55.88 seconds to pocket her second silver of the championship after dominating her semi-final heat in 56.80.
The men’s 4x400m relay quartet—comprising Ryno Riekert, Kryn Romijn, Abelines Schoeman, and Leenert Koekemoer—added a third silver to South Africa’s tally. Having qualified second in their heat in 3:05.08, the team dug deep in a thrilling final to cross the line in 3:02.76, holding off intense competition to claim a podium spot.

South Africa’s four bronze medalists showcased versatility across sprint, distance, and field disciplines.
In the blue-riband event, Marko Ferreira established himself as one of the fastest U20 sprinters on the planet, capturing bronze in the men’s 100m final with a blistering time of 10.16 seconds. Ferreira later anchored the men’s 4x100m relay team to a 6th-place finish in 39.48.
Over 400m, Leenert Koekemoer demonstrated tactical maturity, powering down the home straight to claim bronze in a remarkable 44.96 seconds, with teammate Kryn Romijn placing 7th in 46.16. In the 400m hurdles, Matodzi Ndou joined the medal rush, taking bronze in a competitive final with 49.90 seconds after running an impressive 49.66 in the semi-finals. Fellow hurdler Lesibe Dikgale also delivered strong performances, finishing second in his semi-final in 50.50.
In the field events, Jaco van Dyk delivered when it mattered most, throwing 19.80m in the shot put final to secure a well-earned bronze medal.

- Sprints & Middle Distance: Mukona Manavhela impressed in both the 100m (10.38) and 200m (20.89) semi-finals. Female sprinter Rume Burger reached the 200m final, finishing 8th in 23.89 after dipping under 23.20 in earlier rounds. In the 1500m, Tiisetseo Malungane battled hard to finish 9th in the final (3:42.98).
- Hurdles & Combined Events: Phengo Miyen advanced to the 110m hurdles final, finishing 8th in 13.26. Multitalented decathlete Daniel Von Der Heyden delivered a grueling 10-event performance to finish 6th overall with 7,696 points.
- Throws & Relays: Discus thrower Joshua Gerber earned 9th in the final with a best mark of 61.43m. Marine Grobler and Stephane Hook earned 6th (51.43m) and 8th (49.45m) respectively in the women’s javelin final. The mixed 4x400m relay team also fought into the final, taking 6th place in 3:21.48.
