President Cyril Ramaphosa has met with the family of the late Captain Daniel Perez following a South African government intervention that facilitated the release of his remains by Hamas.
Captain Perez, who was born and raised in South Africa, was taken hostage and killed on 7 October 2023.
During the meeting, President Ramaphosa extended his condolences to the Perez family. He affirmed South Africa’s continued support for an all-inclusive peace process intended to secure lasting peace for the people of both Israel and Palestine.
The South African government highlighted its ongoing commitment to assist all citizens trapped in conflict zones across the globe, emphasizing that such aid is provided regardless of race or religion. Pretoria noted that it also extends support to foreign nationals when requested.
This effort aligns with several recent consular and diplomatic operations carried out by the government. These interventions include facilitating the release of South Africans caught in the war in Syria, helping citizens who were sold to Russian mercenaries, and assisting in the safe return of Ukrainian children.
