Kaizer Chiefs’ MTN8 campaign came to a crashing, premature end on Sunday evening as Lamontville Golden Arrows secured a hard-fought 1-0 quarterfinal victory at the FNB Stadium. Despite dominating long spells of the match, Amakhosi paid the ultimate price for their wastefulness in front of goal, leaving Coach Fernando Da Cruz’s side with an early exit from the cup competition.
The match’s decisive moment arrived eight minutes after the restart. Golden Arrows right-back Khulekani Shezi spotted Chiefs goalkeeper and Captain Brandon Petersen off his line, unleashing an opportunistic cross-shot from wide on the right that caught the netminder off guard at his near post. It was a cruel blow for the hosts, but a moment of brilliance that Abafana Besthende defended with every ounce of resolve.
Chiefs had started the encounter with real intent, pressing high and patiently probing the visitors’ backline. Their first clear opening came in the 14th minute when intricate build-up play between Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Mfundo Vilakazi unlocked the defence to feed Luke Baartman, though Arrows keeper Edward Maova reacted sharply to snatch the ball.
As the first half unfolded, Amakhosi continued to create opportunities but lacked the clinical edge required. Lebohang Maboe flashed two efforts wide, while Ngcobo squandered a glorious chance inside the half-hour mark. Wandile Duba also found the side netting from a tight angle following Vilakazi’s precise pass. On the stroke of halftime, Maova again denied Ngcobo at close range to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0.
Following Shezi’s 53rd-minute opener, Golden Arrows retreated into a compact, low block to protect their precious advantage. Chiefs threw everything forward in response, but Maova remained unbeatable between the posts. The Arrows stopper produced brilliant saves to tip long-range rockets from Maboe over the bar in the 60th and 66th minutes.
Da Cruz reshuffled his pack, introducing new signing Langelihle Phili alongside Mduduzi Shabalala, Thabiso Monyane, and Etiosa Ighodaro to inject fresh attacking impetus. Late strikes from distance by Monyane and Shabalala flirted with the target, but Pitso Dladla’s defensive unit held firm until the final whistle.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Soweto giants, whose early cup exit leaves plenty of questions regarding their execution in the final third. However, Chiefs cannot afford to dwell on the disappointment. They return to Betway Premiership action on Wednesday evening when they host Sekhukhune United at the FNB Stadium, desperate to make amends in their first home league outing of the season.
