REIGER PARK, BOKSBURG — Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has strongly condemned a deadly ambush in Reiger Park, Boksburg, which left two South African Police Service (SAPS) officers and two civilians dead on Friday evening.
The deceased officers, members of the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit, were ambushed while on duty in the area. The shooting also claimed the lives of two civilians and left several others injured.
Following the attack, Premier Lesufi visited the crime scene alongside Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni. Expressing his deepest condolences to the victims’ families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, Lesufi made it clear that the provincial government would treat the assault with maximum gravity.
“An attack on our police is a declaration of war against the state and against the people of Gauteng,” Premier Lesufi declared. “We cannot and will not allow criminals to terrorise our communities, murder police officers and innocent civilians and believe that they can escape the consequences of their actions.”
The Premier noted that police officers dedicate their lives to confronting dangerous criminal elements, making their murder in the line of duty particularly disturbing. He also expressed profound frustration that this was his second visit to Reiger Park following a fatal mass shooting incident.
“This is the second time I have come to Reiger Park under these circumstances,” Lesufi said. “The first time I came here was after a mass shooting, and now I am back because once again innocent people have been killed. This cannot continue. Reiger Park must not become synonymous with mass shootings and the loss of innocent lives.”
In response to the tragedy, Commissioner Mthombeni activated specialized units—including Crime Intelligence, the Tracking Team, Crime Scene Management, and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks)—to launch a comprehensive manhunt for the perpetrators.
Lesufi assured the public that law enforcement would hunt down those responsible, stating: “We are going to find these killers. We are going to arrest them, and they must face the full might of the law.”
The Premier urged members of the public and the local community to assist law enforcement agencies by sharing any critical information.
“Someone knows who did this. Someone knows where the killers are. We appeal to that person to come forward,” Lesufi urged. “Protecting criminals only puts more innocent lives at risk. Our communities must stand with the police, not with those who terrorise them.”
The Gauteng Provincial Government reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with SAPS, local municipalities, and community structures to dismantle organized criminal networks and restore safety to affected neighbourhoods.
