The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State is mourning the passing of Peter Frewen, a foundational figure and long-serving political leader who dedicated over a decade to public office in the province.
Frewen’s tenure in elected office began in local government, where he served as a councillor in the Kopanong Local Municipality from 2000 to 2004. He subsequently transitioned to provincial politics, representing the DA in the Free State Provincial Legislature from 2004 to 2014. During his decade in the legislature, Frewen assumed key organizational leadership roles, serving as Chief Whip of the official opposition caucus and as the party’s provincial Finance Chairperson.
Reflecting on Frewen’s legacy, DA Free State Leader Roy Jankielsohn recognized him as a founding member who left deep political footprints across both the party structure and the provincial legislature. Jankielsohn commended Frewen’s career-long commitment to democratic principles, characterizing him as a sound leader, a tireless campaigner, and a passionate advocate for accountable and responsive governance.
“Our condolences go to his family, friends, and loved ones during this time of loss,” Jankielsohn expressed, honouring Frewen’s remarkable contributions to both the DA and the broader Free State community.
