The Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed in a statement that Mr Jacob Zuma is indeed the president of uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) and cannot remove him as requested by its founder Jabulani Khumalo.
The internal spat in the MKP has spilled over into public platforms and involving the IEC. Khumalo wrote to the Commission demanding that Zuma be removed as the party’s face and leader. The commission confirmed receipt of Khumalo’s communication; however, their hands are tied and can’t do anything about it.
According to the IEC, Jacob Zuma has been president of the party since 10 April 2024, and they only act on instruction of the party leader. The Commission further distanced itself saying they cannot be party of political party internal affairs.
Jabulani Khumalo expressed concern following information that he received that Jacob Zuma and some individuals, including active members and leaders of opposition party’s intention to high jack the party and even kick him out of the party after elections in a letter he wrote dated 5 May 2024.
uMkhonto weSizwe Party has since called for calm within its members and supporters, saying the party remains steadfast and intact amidst adversity brought on by the ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa through his agent Jabulani Khumalo to destabilise the party.
“Despite attempts to sow discord and confusion by Ramaphosa and his white monopoly capital, using dubious degenerates like Mr. Jabulani Khumalo, we assure you that the National Leadership Core remains united, resolute and intact. As confirmed by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Jacob Zuma remains the one and only Leader and President of MK party and continues to lead the party with strength and conviction,” said the MKP.
The party says the actions of Mr. Khumalo vindicate them that they were right in expelling him from the party informed by their internal intelligence. The party says they will not allow agents of Ramaphosa to infiltrate the party with the aim to destabilise it.
