PRETORIA — President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially notified parliamentary leadership of the deployment of 510 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to KwaZulu-Natal. Operating under Operation Prosper, the troops will work in direct cooperation with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to restore calm and secure public infrastructure.
The military intervention comes in response to a surge of violent protests and unrest sparked by a calculated campaign of misinformation concerning a recent Constitutional Court judgment on the Refugee Act. The false narratives have fuelled localized tensions, prompting executive action to safeguard communities and maintain law and order across the province.
According to the official notification submitted to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane, the deployment is authorized under section 201(2)(a) of the Constitution. The troops will remain on the ground—and on standby for any emerging eventualities—from 9 October 2026 through to 30 November 2026.
Treasury and defence estimates place the total expected expenditure for this operational deployment at R34,082,720. Security clusters remain on high alert as authorities urge citizens to rely on verified information and refrain from participating in unlawful actions that threaten regional stability.
