MKP distances itself from Shivambu

The popularity of Floyd Shivambu is on a downward spiral ever since he left the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), his actions have compromised his integrity and his latest stunt on visiting a fugitive of justice Shepherd Bushiri has landed him in serious questionability.

Shivambu visited the self-proclaimed prophets who fled South Africa to avert accountability and justice. In 2020, Shepherd and Mary Bushiri appeared before two different courts in South Africa on multiple criminal charges. They were granted bail pending trial but failed to comply with their bail conditions and fled the country under unknown circumstances.

According to the Department of Justice in South Africa, after being granted bail, the two were later located in Malawi. Following this, South Africa submitted an extradition request to Malawi, seeking their return to stand trial on various charges, including:

Rape, violating bail conditions, contraventions of the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, Banking Act, Civil Aviation Act, and Immigration Act.

South Africa managed to secure the extradition order on 12 March 2025 but Bushiri has appealed it.

During Easter, Bushiri posted a video on social media showing the Secretary General of the uMkhoto weSizwe Party (MKP) visiting him at his church, the reasons for his visit are unknown but this has put the political intellect in a seriously compromised position.

The MKP issued a statement distancing itself from the SG’ visit to the fugitive of justice; according to the Spokesperson of the party, Nhlamulo Ndhela, the party did not know about the visit, nor did it sanction it, Shivambu was there on his personal capacity.

“The party wishes to make it unequivocally clear that this visit was not sanctioned, endorsed or initiated by the leadership or any official structure of the MK Party. The Secretary General undertook this visit in his personal capacity without the mandate or knowledge of the Party.

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party upholds the rule of law and maintains a zero-tolerance stance on criminality in all its forms. When in an unprecedented case, President Zuma was sent to prison without a trial under Roman- Dutch Law; he did not flee from justice but was incarcerated and served time, even though it was a miscarriage of justice and a violation of his human rights.

We remain firmly opposed to any association with individuals who are fugitives from justice. Our values are rooted in integrity, justice and accountability, and we reject any actions that compromise the reputation and ethical standing of our movement,” said the Spokesperson.

It now remains to be seen whether MKP will take disciplinary action against its SG for compromising the integrity of the party. Floyd Shivambu has been facing serious push-backs within the party since his arrival, with some questioning his intensions on joining the MKP, his seemingly uncalculated move to visit Bushiri has just made things worse for him and his future looks bleak with the MKP.
