Lamola met with expelled Ambassador Rasool

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has in a very brief statement confirmed that the Minister for DIRCO Mr Ronald Lamola has met with the US expelled Ambassador for South Africa Mr Ebrahim Rasool.

The department is playing its cards very close to its chest, careful not to say anything to the public and to the media. According to the department, Lamola did meet with Rasool following his return from the United States of America.

The ministry says a formal report will be submitted to President Cyril Ramaphosa for consideration, and until such time, the department will not engage in any public engagement on the matter.

The South African Ambassador to the United States Ebrahim Rasool was declared a persona non grata by the Trump administration following his comments labelling the U.S President Donald Trump a white supremacist. The trump administration took offence and expelled the Ambassador with immediate effect.

Rasool landed to a hero’s welcome at the Cape Town International Airport over the weekend, where he re-affirmed his stance on the Trump administration saying he has no regrets. He further said the already strained relations with the U.S need to be mended and that there is no need to deploy a white ambassador to the U.S to replace him.

Ebrahim Rasool is expected to meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa this week.
