
Chipo Morapedi-Mirara, the Spokesperson for Harmony Gold Mining Company confirmed to The Business Weekly that investigations into the two fatal mining incidents that claimed a total of five lives is still on-going.
The two separate incidents occurred on Tuesday morning, 4 February 2025, at a development end at Doornkop Mine, in Soweto, Gauteng, which claimed two lives and at Joel Mine, near Theunissen in the Free State Province which claimed three lives.
“The causes of these two unrelated incidents are currently under investigation, both internally and by the regulator. The relevant authorities have been kept fully apprised of the incidents. Investigations into the causes of these incidents will be led by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, supported by labour representatives and mine management at each operation,” said Morapedi-Mirara.
Beyers Nel, the CEO of Harmony Gold Mining Company expressed his condolences to the affected families.
