IMF Taps Former Polish Finance Minister Mateusz Szczurek to Lead European Department

WASHINGTON, DC — In a move that signals a focus on deep policy experience and fiscal discipline, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced the appointment of Mateusz Szczurek as the next Director of the European Department (EUR). Effective July 27, 2026, the former Polish Finance Minister will succeed Alfred Kammer, who is retiring from the Fund.

The transition comes at a critical juncture for the European continent, which continues to navigate complex structural transitions, fiscal framework debates, and regional growth disparities.

A Proven Track Record in Fiscal Management

Mr. Szczurek, a Polish national, steps into the role with an impressive resume that spans national governance, multilateral institutions, and the private financial sector.

  • Government Leadership: As Poland’s Minister of Finance from 2013 to 2015, Szczurek managed fiscal policy, public debt, and financial institution oversight during a volatile period for European markets. His tenure was marked by key reforms aimed at strengthening public administration and fiscal management.
  • Multilateral Expertise: Between 2016 and 2024, Szczurek served at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), leading macroeconomic assessments and policy dialogues across EU member states. Crucially, his time on the inaugural European Fiscal Board places him at the very center of ongoing debates surrounding Europe’s overarching fiscal rules.
  • Private Sector & Development: Most recently, since 2024, he served as Chief Risk Officer and Management Board Member at BGK, Poland’s development bank, balancing risk management with ESG and financial modeling. His early career includes a stint as Chief Economist for Central and Eastern Europe at ING Bank.

“Mateusz’s unique combination of executive and policy leadership and deep knowledge of the European economic landscape will be invaluable in advancing the Fund’s work with its European members,” Georgieva noted in the announcement.

Navigating Europe’s Fractured Economic Landscape

The IMF’s European Department is responsible for steering the Fund’s operations across Europe, delivering vital policy advice, technical assistance, and financial lifelines to member states.

Szczurek’s academic credentials—including a PhD in Economics from the University of Sussex, alongside degrees from the University of Warsaw and Columbia University—suggest an analytical rigor well-suited for the IMF’s data-driven mandate. Having also taught public finance at the University of Warsaw, he bridges the gap between theoretical economic modeling and pragmatic political execution.

As Europe grapples with productivity challenges, defense spending pressures, and green energy transitions, Szczurek’s immediate challenge will be ensuring the IMF remains a steadying force. His background suggests an emphasis on sound public finances and institutional resilience, traits that European policy-making circles will undoubtedly watch closely as he takes the helm this July.
