The Electoral Commission (IEC) feels vindicated following the Electoral Court’s judgment on Tuesday, 26 March 2024, in relation to the African National Congress’s (ANC) bid to have uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party deregistered.
The court found that MK party complied with the IEC’s laws regarding registering a party and further handed down its judgment dismissing the ANC’s application to have the party deregistered. The court also found that the ruling party delayed in its application and reasons given for the delay to oppose the registration of MK party did not hold water.
The IEC says it has noted the judgement which provides the necessary clarity and certainty to enable the finalisation of candidate nomination processes.
“The ruling confirms that the decision to register this party was taken regularly and in terms of the law. The Commission reiterates its commitment and preparedness to deliver free and fair 2024 National and Provincial elections,” said the Spokesperson for the IEC Kate Bapela.
