South Africa’s music industry gathered on August 15, 2026, to celebrate the 32nd edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMA32), highlighting the country’s rich artistic talent. Following the event, Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, issued an official commendation praising the local music community and reaffirming Gauteng’s central role in driving the nation’s creative economy.
MEC Maile extended congratulations on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government to the provincial winners—including performing artists, producers, songwriters, and composers—celebrating their victories as a testament to the region’s dynamic creative scene.
“The recognition given to these artists once again affirms the province’s undisputed role as the creative heartbeat of South Africa and a leading incubator of talent on the African continent,” Maile stated.
He emphasized that Gauteng continues to draw talent nationwide due to its premier recording facilities, broadcast networks, and performing venues. Maile added that national awards provide key validation for local talent, building confidence while inspiring established figures to uplift upcoming artists.
Honoring Pioneers and Global Ambassadors
A central highlight of SAMA32 was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to legendary producer and entrepreneur Oscar “Oskido” Mdlongwa. The honour follows his recent bestowal of the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Commenting on Oskido’s contribution, MEC Maile noted: “There is no doubt that Oskido deserved this accolade as one of the pioneering figures in the music industry from our Province. Adding the Lifetime Achievement Award to the many honours Oskido has received is an affirmation of the contribution and investment he has made both as an artist and a businessman who shaped the careers of many in the industry”.
Grammy-winning sensation Tyla was also recognized at the ceremony, taking home the International Achievement Award for her breakout global success. Maile particularly commended her stage presence and solidarity with fellow artists. Upon receiving her award, Tyla invited other musicians onto the stage to share in the milestone—a gesture Maile praised as a demonstration of Ubuntu.
“This affirmed their presence and contribution to the music space and should not be taken as an ordinary moment,” Maile emphasized. “It is such acts of kindness and recognition of others by a global star that will help open doors and encourage them to do more”.
Capitalizing on the Digital Transformation
In addition to celebrating individual honours, MEC Maile encouraged local creatives to actively adapt to modern industry trends. Pointing to rapid digital transformation, he highlighted new avenues for independent production, global distribution, and audience monetization across the broader creative ecosystem.
“Music continues to evolve, especially considering how it is produced, disseminated and consumed, thus creating opportunities for all involved in the entire ecosystem and contributing to the growth of economies,” Maile remarked.
Concluding his remarks, Maile reiterated the government’s commitment to nurturing local arts and maintaining Gauteng’s stature as the “Home of Champions”.
