JOHANNESBURG — In a major push to decentralize government services and reach marginalized populations, Gauteng Social Development MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko officially took over the Bekkersdal Social Integrated Facility.
The move marks a critical step forward in bringing comprehensive social welfare support directly to Bekkersdal and surrounding communities.
Designed as a multi-purpose hub, the facility houses an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre, a Day Care Centre for Older Persons, and departmental office space—including dedicated offices for the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

By integrating these vital services under one roof, the provincial department aims to streamline intervention efforts and make assistance more accessible to individuals, families, and vulnerable groups.
Speaking to residents during the official takeover, MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko emphasized that the launch symbolizes a broader commitment to building an active developmental state.
“The opening of this Social Integrated Facility represents an important milestone in the collective programme of building a developmental state that is capable of bringing government services closer to the people,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.
“We always maintain that social development cannot only be reduced to a distribution of food parcels and social relief, it must be an instrument of social transformation, restoring human dignity.”
The MEC noted that the centre is intended to function as a site of meaningful intervention, where citizens can seek help seamlessly and with dignity while enabling the state to mount a coordinated response to local social challenges.
The Gauteng Department of Social Development expects the facility to substantially strengthen its grassroots footprint, enhance community-based interventions, and foster long-term social inclusion and well-being across the province.
