Gauteng Department of Health Opens 2027 Nursing Applications: A Lifeline for Aspiring Healthcare Professionals

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has officially opened the application window for the 2027 Student Nurse Intake at the Gauteng College of Nursing (GCON). This initiative offers a vital opportunity for aspiring healthcare workers to secure professional training amidst growing demand for skilled medical personnel in the public health sector.

Program Details and Campuses

The comprehensive Diploma in Nursing is distributed across four premier campuses under the GCON umbrella:

  • Ann Latsky Campus
  • Bonalesedi Campus
  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Campus
  • SG Lourens Campus

Eligibility and Criteria

To qualify for consideration, candidates must meet specific criteria set by the department:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens who reside and matriculated in Gauteng.
  • Prospective students need a Senior Certificate (Standard 10), National Senior Certificate (Grade 12), or National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4, meeting all prescribed admission requirements.
  • Individuals currently receiving funding from other government departments, state-funded schemes, public entities (including NSFAS), or those already enrolled at a tertiary institution are ineligible.

Selection and Training Commitments

Shortlisted applicants will face compulsory psychometric testing. Successful candidates must subsequently pass medical surveillance and have all submitted documents verified.

Accepted students will sign a learning contract with GCON and engage in Work Integrated Learning (WIL). This practical component requires working shifts, weekends, public holidays, and night duty across GDoH medical facilities.

Application Process and Warnings Against Scams

Applications must be submitted exclusively online through the official GDoH nursing intake portal by 30 October 2026. Applicants must upload certified copies of their identity document and matric certificate in PDF format. Walk-in applications will not be accepted.

Authorities issued a stern warning against fraudsters, reminding the public that applications are entirely free of charge with zero admission fees at any stage.

For legitimate enquiries, applicants can contact the GCON Central Office at 060 541 4973. Due to high anticipated volumes, only successful candidates will be contacted.
