South Africa has officially elevated its trade and economic partnership with Egypt by launching the Joint South Africa-Egypt Business Council. Unveiled on October 2, 2026, on the margins of the Alamein-Africa Business Forum, the strategic alliance seeks to supercharge intra-African commerce, capitalizing on the momentum of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Egypt stands as South Africa’s largest export market in North Africa and a critical strategic partner. Boasting a population exceeding 102 million and a gross domestic product (GDP) of $362 billion, the North African nation represents one of the continent’s most dynamic and diversified economies, offering a vital gateway into the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.
Strengthening Bilateral Momentum
The launch builds on steady economic growth between the two nations. Direct bilateral trade expanded by 26%, climbing from R3.4 billion in 2024 to R4.3 billion in 2025. Simultaneously, South African exports to Egypt rose by 21%, increasing from R1.3 billion to R1.6 billion over the same period.
While South Africa has traditionally maintained a trade deficit with Egypt, these figures cement South Africa’s status as Egypt’s 46th export destination and 58th source of global imports.
High-level leaders gathered at the Alamein Africa Forum—including representatives from the AfCFTA Secretariat, the Egyptian government, Afreximbank, and the African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM)—to champion the partnership.
Pillars of the Joint Business Council
The newly minted Joint Business Council is designed to foster practical commercial ventures between South African and Egyptian enterprises, utilizing both countries as regional economic hubs. Key initiatives encompass:
- Mining and Minerals Partnership: Aligning industrial capabilities across resource-rich corridors.
- Automotive and New-Energy Mobility Partnership: Scaling manufacturing and green-mobility supply chains.
- Agriculture and Agro-Processing Corridor: Boosting food security and cross-border food supply networks.
- Engineering and Infrastructure Partnership: Collaborating on major capital and engineering projects.
- Renewable Energy and Green Industrial Platform: Accelerating the transition to sustainable industrial practices.
- Africa Joint-Venture Investment Fund: Establishing a private-sector investment vehicle targeted at scaling enterprises beyond their domestic markets.
Unlocking the Automotive Sector
A major focal point of the forum was the automotive industry, held under the theme “Unlocking Africa’s Automotive Industry Potential under the AfCFTA”. Stakeholders explored establishing an integrated automotive corridor linking Cape Town to Cairo, connecting Southern, Eastern, and Northern African manufacturing hubs.
Key product opportunities for South African exports to Egypt—such as pneumatic rubber tyres, motorcycle parts, and vehicle seating—present an import displacement potential ranging between $22.4 million and $44.8 million.
Furthermore, bilateral talks between South African Minister Parks Tau and industry leaders opened doors for potential Complete Knocked Down (CKD) investments in South Africa, promising future job creation and industrial expansion.
As the AfCFTA roadmap continues to yield tangible results, this landmark council signals a transformative step forward for continental integration and robust South-North African trade cooperation.
