Driven by her love and passion for tourism and turning every experience into a lasting memory with a unique touch, Lesego Mancoe, a black woman from the Free State, in Welkom braved herself to venture into an industry that is male dominated.
The ambitious Mancoe used to work for a tourism company before venturing out to start her own company, she was exposed to the beauty of tourism while working and learnt the ins and outs of the sector. With her experience in a sector where women make up 70% of the workforce but are however underrepresented in managerial or senior roles, making up less than 40% of representation, she decided to hold the bull by its horns.
The tenacious Lesego Mancoe started her own tourism company in 2006, Homa Tours & Events; she is now counted amongst visionary and inspirational women, the movers and shakers in the sector in South Africa. About 14 to 22% of tourism companies or agencies are owned by women in the country; and she stepped in to make her mark and be counted in the industry and in history.
Mancoe told The Business Weekly that she was driven by the passion she had for tourism, and wanted to share the knowledge to communities and create memorable experiences for others.
Starting the business was not easy; she had to face her own share of challenges, and persevered through them all. Some of the discouraging challenges she encountered was that of people stealing her tour packages and creating them for themselves.
The challenges however did not weigh her down; instead, she became more creative and wiser by being on top her game. Some of the best moments Mancoe experienced in her journey include learning about others cultures and traditions, and learning about other provinces as well.
Homa Tours & Events offers services beyond the borders of the Free State Province; the company has spread its footprint throughout the country and is now venturing into expanding its wings by making international trips in future.
When asked what keeps her going? She responded; “When clients are satisfies, repeat clients coming back and introducing other clients, when goals are met and clients get the best experience.”
Homa Tours & Events currently has two employees, as part of her future plans; Lesego Mancoe says she wants to own her own fleet, busses, and also a tourism school.
