In an effort to grow its revenue, CENTLEC is currently implementing meter audits across its area of supply, and customers found wanting will be cut off from the grid until such time they are paid up.
The power utility has tasted victory with one of the giant customers in Bloemfontein, Waterfront mall where the court ordered the entity to pay CENTLEC what is due to them.
According to the Acting Spokesperson for CENTLEC Mr Tseliso Leba, the parastatal is currently conducting comprehensive meter audits, physical asset verification, and infrastructure servicing across its area of supply, particularly in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality.
Leba says this initiative aims to improve revenue collection, curb electricity theft, and ensure the sustainability of electricity services. He says this process affects all CENTLEC customers, both in private and public sectors.
“We can confirm that some of the defaulting customers are housed in privately owned properties, some are big businesses, while others are shopping Centres within Mangaung. Recently, CENTLEC (SOC) Ltd has taken legal action against some of the defaulters in an effort to recover over R150 million in debt.
Following the ruling by the courts of law in our favour, CENTLEC is in a better position to enforce its debt collection against some of these companies. This is not a campaign against anyone, but a continued effort to recover revenue and to ensure proper maintenance of our network infrastructure and physical verification of our infrastructure.
The credit control process happens monthly as per the approved Credit Control and Debt Collection Policy,” said Tseliso Leba.
