Cape Town City and Pirates play a stalemate

The Sea Robbers went up against Cape Town City on Wednesday night at Cape Town Stadium where the teams played to a one all draw in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-finals.

Cape Town City kicked-off the game, but Orlando Pirates soon took charge of the game and went on offense. From a brilliant long pass from the half of Pirates, finding Relebohile Mofokeng in the box of Cape Town City, the striker wasted no time, he blasted the ball past the keeper and scored the opener of the match in the 15th minute.

The hosts did not take it lying down, they pushed for an equalizer and had a threating opportunity on the 19th minute but it was not meant to be. Cape Town City kept on pressing on the Buccaneers searching for an equalizer throughout the first half.

The game went to break with Pirates leading 1-0.

In the second half, Orlando Pirates was forced to play deep and defend as Cape Town City applied more pressure on the title defenders. Their efforts were finally rewarded when Jaedin Rhodes levelled the playing field on the 61” minute.

Pirates started to play the game seeking to lead the game once more; however, Cape Town City stood its ground until the end of the game. Pirates had a number of threating chances but could not convert them into goals. As the Sea Robbers searched for a lead, they ran out of time and referee blew the final whistle of the game.

The match ended Orlando Pirates 1- 1 Cape Town City.

Orlando Pirates will host Cape Town City in their next clash when they meet again at the home grounds of the title defenders in Soweto on Saturday, 31 August 2024, at Orlando Stadium. The game is expected to kick-off at 15: 00.
