JOHANNESBURG — Law enforcement agencies across Gauteng have carried out a massive, coordinated crackdown to tackle rising crime, enforce municipal by-laws, and prevent illegal land invasions across the province.
The extensive joint initiative, conducted between June 30 and July 16, 2026, brought together the Gauteng Traffic Police, the South African Police Service (SAPS), local Metro Police Departments (MPDs), and various municipal agencies. The operations aimed to restore public order, safeguard critical infrastructure, and enhance overall public safety.
Commending the multi-agency strategy, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety emphasized that integrated operations remain vital for curbing lawlessness and upholding the rule of law throughout the province.
Key Regional Highlights
Tshwane
The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) led aggressive traffic and by-law enforcement measures:
- Arrests: 52 individuals were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol, 211 pedestrians were arrested for endangering freeway traffic, and 66 individuals were detained for immigration law violations. Additional arrests involved reckless driving, public drinking, housebreaking, and infrastructure tampering.
- Fines & Demolitions: Officers issued 49,375 AARTO notices totalling over R6.6 million, alongside 734 by-law fines valued at R992,050. Over 100 vehicles were impounded, 40 were discontinued, and 146 illegal structures were demolished to prevent land invasions.
Ekurhuleni
Operations by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) yielded crucial crime-prevention outcomes:
- Victim Rescued: A kidnapping victim was safely rescued unharmed, leading to the arrest of three suspects.
- Illegal Activity & By-Laws: Suspects were taken into custody for assault (GBH), robbery, illicit drug dealing, and possession of stolen police equipment. EMPD officers also removed illegal land structures, confiscated unregistered goods (including over 30 live chickens under animal welfare violations), and cracked down on excessive speeding.
Sedibeng District
Roadblocks and targeted inspections dominated operations across Sedibeng, Vanderbijlpark, and Palm Springs:
- Authorities executed 403 arrest warrants and issued R278,050 in Section 56 notices.
- Environmental health officials inspected 57 formal and informal businesses, enforcing compliance and issuing contravention notices to non-compliant local tuck-shops and stores.
West Rand & Merafong City
- Merafong City: Authorities targeted infrastructure damage, illegal cable removal, dumping, and unauthorized advertising. Fines were levied for unpermitted trading, and 54 illegal advertising signs were dismantled.
- Mogale City & Rand West: High-speed enforcement camera operations detected 13,476 speeding motorists, resulting in fines exceeding R6.7 million. Multi-departmental patrols dismantled 105 illegal structures across Krugersdorp and Kagiso, while additional joint operations led to the closure of non-compliant food shops.

The Department of Community Safety reaffirmed its resolve to protect state infrastructure, secure municipal land, and enforce zero tolerance against criminal behaviour.
