SOWETO — President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially unveiled a new South African Reserve Bank (SARB) commemorative coin at the Hector Pieterson Memorial Site in Soweto, Johannesburg.
The unveiling was a key event marking the 50th Anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising. Issued to commemorate the historic events of June 16, 1976, the coin honours the courageous young South Africans who stood up against Bantu Education. Their defiance became a powerful, enduring symbol of the nationwide struggle for freedom, dignity, and equality.
According to officials, the coin is a lasting tribute to the profound courage, resilience, and ultimate sacrifice of the youth. It serves to recognize those whose bold actions fundamentally helped shape South Africa’s journey toward democracy.
According to the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), the commemorative coin is a circulation coin and carries the same value as the current R2 coin in circulation. Residents are further urged not to hoard the coin as it is meant for circulation.
