President Cyril Ramaphosa addressing the nation on Monday evening, 11 May 2026, said he will not give in to his detractors who are calling for his immediate resignation as there is nothing in the Constitutional Court’s judgement that compels him to resign.
The president told the nation that since the judgement by the apex court, there have been many calls for him to resign in many circles, while others appealed to him not to resign. He told the nation that the ConCourt did not make any judgement on his alleged conduct, nor any findings on prima facie evidence on his misconduct nor if such misconduct is found is justified to impeach or remove him from office.
“Instead, the Constitutional Court judgement reinforces the principles, the rights and processes underpinning our constitutional order. This explicitly includes the right to take the report of the independent panel into review; I therefore respectfully want to make it clear that I will not resign.
To do so would be to preempt a process defined by the Constitution. To do so would be to give credence to a panel report that unfortunately has grave flaws; to do so would be to abdicate the responsibility that I assumed when I became the president of the republic; to resign now would be to give in to those who seek to reverse the renewal of our society, the rebuilding of our institutions, and the end to prosecution,” said President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa said he is still intent on serving the nation as there is so much to do. He pointed out the immense work that still needs to be done under his leadership making it clear that he will remain in office despite the loud noises calling for his resignation.
“I remain here and I am not resigning. May God continue to bless South Africa and protect her people, thank you,” he concluded.
