
The Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) defending champions Banyana Banyana have sneaked into the semi-finals after beating Senegal on penalties on Saturday, 20 July 2025, at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco.
The African defending champions, though starting slow, they showed determination to win the match, in the 22nd minute of the game, South Africa had a threatening opportunity to score against the Lionesses of Teranga but were unable to convert.
They applied pressure on Senegal but were unfortunate to not score.
Banyana Banyana finally found the net in the second half, but the goal did not stand because of an offside. The African Queens were not done; they applied even more pressure in search of an opener, and later were awarded a penalty. However, the Lionesses protested against the awarding of the penalty and after consulting VAR, the referee said no penalty.
The match ended on a goalless draw, leading to penalties. Banyana Banyana keeper Andile Dlamini became the woman of the moment as she made a couple of saves, crushing the ambitions of Senegal to progress beyond the quarter finals.
South Africa beat Senegal 4-1 in penalties, putting them on a path to the semi-finals as their quest to defend their title continues.
