Residents residing in informal settlements in Mangaung Metro will finally be added to the national grid as the Executive Mayor of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM) Cllr Gregory Nthatisi launched the Electrification Project in Botshabelo on Tuesday, 16 April 2024.
Nthatisi, since assuming office as the Executive Mayor of the metro has been on a drive to accelerate service delivery ensuring that citizens have access to basic services. Most of the settlements in the City have been without electricity, the news to be added to the grid were welcomed by the residents of ward 32, 37 and 38 where the Mayor launched the project.
“With the City’ energy entity Centlec, we will be electrifying a number of settlements across the City. We would like to thank you for coming today as we launch the Mangaung Electrification Project. After the electrification is done and we have switched on, we request that residents buy electricity. If you don’t have the means, then we encourage you to apply to be in the indigent register and you will get free basic services,” said the Executive Mayor Cllr Gregory Nthatisi.
Though the metro is on a drive to install electricity across the settlements in the City, Nthatisi pointed out that there still remain a challenge that the power utility and the municipality need to overcome; he said some households are not registered and do not have addresses, which creates a problem for Centlec to connect them to the power grid.
