From Childhood Dreams to Glamour Boy: Elias Mokwana Ready to Ignite Kaizer Chiefs

For every young footballer growing up in South Africa kicking a makeshift ball across dusty pitches, there is a defining dream: pulling on the famous Gold and Black of Kaizer Chiefs. For 27-year-old winger Elias Mokwana, that lifelong ambition has finally become reality.

Following his official unveiling this week, the explosive attacker spoke exclusively to www.kaizerchiefs.com, opening up about a winding football journey, a near-miss transfer, and his unwavering determination to bring the glory days back to Naturena.

Mokwana’s path to the Soweto giants was anything but straightforward, shaped by a nomadic childhood that instilled early resilience. Born in Pretoria, where his mother was working, he spent his formative years moving between provinces.

At the age of three, he relocated to Limpopo to live with his grandmother before moving to Mpumalanga at five, where he began formal schooling and took his first serious steps into football.

That grassroots foundation eventually paved the way for a breakthrough in junior football, catching the eye of Polokwane City Rovers. With Rovers, Mokwana tasted early success, capturing the ABC Motsepe League North West stream title.

His stock continued to rise following a subsequent move to Sekhukhune United, where his dynamic flank play and electrifying pace terrorized opposition defences for two seasons and ultimately earned him a high-profile move abroad to Tunisian powerhouse Espérance.

Yet, the pull of Naturena was never far away. Mokwana admits that his heart has belonged to Amakhosi since childhood. In fact, the union almost happened much sooner.

“I grew up supporting Amakhosi,” Mokwana revealed. “I first heard that they were interested in me when I was at Sekhukhune. Instead of going to Esperance, I was supposed to come here, but unfortunately some obstacles prevented it from happening at the time.”

When the call finally came a second time, the reaction was deeply personal. Sitting with his sisters, Mokwana’s immediate instinct was to dial his mother and share the life-changing news.

“I can’t explain the feeling exactly. I’m excited. It’s a very nice feeling,” he shared. “This is a good place with good people, and I am very happy to be here.”

Stepping into the cauldron of Kaizer Chiefs brings immense scrutiny and expectation. The weight of the Gold & Black jersey has tested many seasoned professionals over the years. However, Mokwana views the pressure not as a burden, but as the fulfilment of a destiny.

“For me, it is a dream come true,” he said. “I have always wanted to prove myself in this team and to play a part in bringing some trophies to the Club.”

As Amakhosi faithful look to a new era under their latest acquisition, Mokwana’s blend of international experience, domestic grit, and profound emotional connection to the badge makes him one of the most compelling signings of the season. If his childhood passion translates onto the pitch, the Glamour Boys may have just found the spark they need to reclaim their throne.
