Johannesburg — In a resounding testament to a shifting economic consciousness among South Africa’s youth, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) has announced the winners of its 2026 Investment Challenge, capping off a landmark year defined by unprecedented participation.
The premier financial education initiative saw participation surge by 39% compared to 2025, drawing nearly 92,000 learners and students nationwide. This milestone highlights an escalating appetite among young South Africans to master market mechanics, portfolio construction, and informed decision-making through a simulated trading environment backed by a virtual R1 million portfolio.
Fostering the Capital Market Participants of Tomorrow
Ralph Speirs, Senior CSI Officer at the JSE, emphasized the critical socio-economic implications of the programme’s growth.
“Financial literacy is one of the most powerful tools for expanding opportunity and enabling meaningful economic participation,” said Speirs. “Our goal is not simply to teach young people about investing but to help develop the investors, entrepreneurs and capital market participants of the future.”
Participants tackled various market dynamics by allocating virtual capital across diverse strategies, spanning income, equity, speculator, and exchange-traded fund (ETF/ETN) portfolios. To reward their analytical rigor, the JSE distributed annual prizes valued at R1 million in ETF investment vouchers. Notably, the winners of the Universities Speculator Portfolio also secured an exclusive international stock exchange trip.

Looking ahead, the exchange intends to scale the initiative further, ensuring young people from every background gain early, practical exposure to financial tools.
