By Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has officially appointed Lebogang Maile, the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education and Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, to serve as Acting Premier of the province. The appointment takes effect from Thursday, 3 September, through Tuesday, 8 September 2026.
The temporary transfer of executive authority comes as Premier Lesufi takes sick leave to allow for a full recovery.
The decision was formalized in accordance with Section 131(1)(a) and Section 13 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996. These statutory provisions regulate the temporary delegation of executive powers within provincial governments, ensuring uninterrupted governance and administrative continuity during a premier’s absence.
During the six-day period, Maile will assume full executive authority, powers, and obligations vested in the Office of the Premier. Provincial government officials confirmed that the measure ensures the smooth and uninterrupted operational running of the Gauteng Provincial Government across all executive portfolios.
Maile, a senior leader within the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng, brings extensive executive experience to the role. Having previously served across multiple provincial portfolios—including Human Settlements, Infrastructure Development, and Finance—his temporary leadership provides stability at the helm of South Africa’s economic hub.
Government spokespersons Elijah Mhlanga and Sizwe Pamla confirmed the transition, assuring the public that provincial operations and executive function remain fully operational. Lesufi is expected to resume his duties following the conclusion of his sick leave on September 8.
