The Democratic Alliance (DA) has renewed its calls for urgent municipal reform in the Free State following the release of the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA), which places the province’s unemployment rate at a stubborn 37.3%.
According to the official figures released this week, 42.9% of young people in the province aged 15–34 fall into the category of NEET—not in employment, education, or training. The data underscores a persistent structural crisis, with youth NEET rates in the province remaining above 40% continuously since 2022.
Political Backlash Over Local Governance
In a statement issued on August 12, David van Vuuren, the DA Spokesperson on Economic Development in the Free State Legislature, attributed the prolonged economic stagnation directly to governance failures under the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
Van Vuuren argued that local infrastructure collapse and unreliable basic municipal service delivery are actively deterring commercial investment and business expansion across the province. “The reality is that failing municipalities are holding back economic growth and condemning future generations of young Free Staters to unemployment,” Van Vuuren stated, emphasizing the DA’s platform that stable local governance and sound financial management are prerequisites for job creation.
The opposition party pointed to its own governance record in other parts of the country as a model for economic recovery, arguing that municipal financial responsibility directly correlates with employment growth.
High Stakes Ahead of November Polls
With local municipal elections scheduled for November 4, the economic data serves as a focal point for campaign rhetoric across the province. Opposition parties are positioning basic service delivery and local infrastructure maintenance as the decisive economic policy issues for voters.
As the Free State continues to grapple with stagnant growth rates and high youth non-participation, the debate over municipal reform and provincial economic strategy is expected to intensify further in the weeks leading up to the ballot.
