BLOEMFONTEIN — The Free State Legislature has expressed deep sadness following the passing of former Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) and Executive Council member, Mr. Thembeni Nxangisa. His passing on July 23, 2026, was confirmed to the legislature by the Nxangisa family.
Nxangisa was a prominent figure in provincial politics during the 6th Administration, serving in the provincial legislature from May 2019 to May 2024. Over his five-year tenure, he occupied key governance and legislative portfolios that shaped policy and administration across the Free State.
His public service career included appointments to critical portfolios within the provincial cabinet, where he served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and subsequently as MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development. Beyond his executive responsibilities, Nxangisa played a central role in legislative oversight and parliamentary management, serving as the Chief Whip of the majority party and as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development.
In an official statement, Speaker of the Free State Legislature, Hon. Mxolisi Dukwana, extended condolences on behalf of the institution, its presiding officers, members, and administrative staff to Nxangisa’s family, friends, and colleagues within the African National Congress (ANC).
“Mr. Nxangisa served the people of the Free State with commitment throughout his time in this Legislature and in the Executive Council,” Speaker Dukwana stated. “His contribution to the work of governance and oversight in our Province will not be forgotten. We stand with his family during this difficult time.”
The legislature has called on its members and staff to keep the Nxangisa family in their thoughts during this time of mourning. Official details regarding memorial services and funeral arrangements will be announced following further consultations between the provincial government and the family.
